Stephen Yam King Lam Stephen Yam is currently the President of the Hong Kong Double Bass Society, the Vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Lower Strings Ensemble and member of Bassmen. Stephen started learning double bass with Lam Kiu Kok, a double bassist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 14. He was admitted into the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1994 and received his Diploma and Bachelor degree in music in 1996 and 1999 respectively. He was given high appraisals and awarded the Exxon Energy Limited Scholarship. Yam actively takes part in music activities. He was appointed to be the tutti double bass player of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta when he was 20. He was also invited to perform with the Macau Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, HK China Philharmonic Orchestra and New Philharmonic of Hong Kong. In 1997, he joined the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) and performed in the hand-over ceremony at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre. He was appointed the principal double bassist of AYO twice in the summers of 1998 and 1999. During these 3 summers, he came under the instruction of several renowned American double bassists, namely Stephen Tramontozz, Joseph Lesche and Paul Ellison. He was also guided under double bass virtuosos such as Lawrence Hurst, Gottfried Engels, Miloslav Jelínek, Catalin Rotaru etc. Besides his performing career, Yam shows enthusiasm towards music education. He is active in nourishing the music professions for the next generation. His students have won prizes and awards in the numerous competitions in Hong Kong and International as well. He was invited to be the instructor of the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the double bass instructor of several secondary and primary schools, and the Hong Kong Music Office. He was the conductor of the Joint Primary Schools Orchestra of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.
